For my Teach Out, I want to create a short professional development presentation that could be used with admissions staff. My goal is to connect Gómez's article to the work admissions professionals do every day and show that representation is not just a marketing strategy, it's an important part of creating access to higher education.
The presentation will encourage admissions professionals to reflect on questions like: What does meaningful representation actually look like in college admissions?
How do our words, materials, and recruitment practices impact students' sense of belonging?
Are we asking students to fit into our campus culture, or are we creating a culture where different identities are valued?
I also want to include practical ideas that admissions offices can start using right away. These might include evaluating recruitment materials through a representation lens, highlighting authentic student stories instead of just statistics, using more inclusive language during recruitment, and building stronger relationships with communities that have historically been left out of higher education.
I chose this project because it connects directly to the work I do every day. Throughout this course, we've talked about equity, power, identity, and access. This Teach Out gives me the opportunity to take those ideas beyond the classroom and apply them to higher education in a way that I hope will help admissions professionals better serve students from all backgrounds.
